2018 Pacific District Convention Highlights
Educate, Empower, Embrace: Lechi Lach, the 2018 WRJ Pacific District Convention was a wonderful success. Held on October 18-21, 2018, at the beautiful DoubleTree by Hilton San Diego Mission Valley, chocolate chip cookies were abundant and the sun always shone. We were joined by our special guests:
These dynamic women, along with many others, shared their expertise and experience, and engaged us during Shabbat, Torah study, and workshops. We had the opportunity to learn and exchange ideas with other women, hear the social justice challenges confronting all of us, and discuss how and what YOU can do to make a change.
Our wish for a successful WRJ Pacific District 2018 convention was not only met but greatly surpassed. On October 17th, an army of dedicated women went to work organizing, setting up, preparing for the 160 attendees who would be joining us. With over 50 first timers in attendance each woman was matched with a mentor where an overview of “what to expect” was presented and mentors found their mentees. After a casual dinner we kicked off with special greetings from outgoing President, Judie Ning and heard from our WRJ guest, Rabbi Marla Feldman. Welcoming the San Diego Jewish Men’s Chorus set the stage for a fun tee-shirt decorating activity and an opportunity to gather and remember our dear past president, Ellen A. Pollack.
Over 15 workshops covering everything from new tips and tricks for using technology to Adding Humor to Your Presentations were conducted and well attended. We were welcomed to Temple Emanu-El for Shabbat and instantly became a part of their congregation as Rabbi Deb Marcus led us in prayer and song. It was a magical night, also including pink Challah, with a fabulous Shabbat dinner to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness month.
Saturday services, written by University Synagogue Sisterhood (also award winning) was a teaching service and very participatory, including installation of the 2018-2020 board of directors. Cantor Janece Cohen and choir director Margie Meadow blessed us all with song and prayer.
Scholar-In-Residence Rabbi Dr. Tamara Cohen Eskinazi, shared her wisdom and teaching during a workshop and in the opening Plenary. As is usually the case for our district, a fabulous YES FUND brunch was held Sunday morning with guest speaker, Zachary Herrmann, immediate president of NFTY, who he shared his experiences and gratitude for all WRJ has made possible for him through our support of NFTY. A record setting amount of donations were collected.
We are looking forward to seeing you all again in 2020 in Orange County, CA!
