Social Action Fund In Memory of Jane Marcus
When long-time WRJ board member and activist Jane Marcus got an idea for something that would improve the world, there was no stopping her. Jane served as WRJ PD Regional Vice Chair of Northern California Affiliations, and also as a past president of Beth Am Women in Los Altos Hills, California. She was a visionary, who helped change lives and social policy.
What was a nice Jewish girl doing talking about medical marijuana, mental health issues, and drug policy 20 years ago? Jane envisioned a society that helped and supported people: A society that educated itself with a truthful dialogue about its responsibilities.
If you needed a friend, Jane was there. If you had an idea for social action, Jane would research it through the middle of the night. Because of her activism, Women of Reform Judaism and the Union of Reform Judaism have supported the use of medical marijuana for more than 15 years. It was a grassroots movement that educated our progressive community and helped change drug policy.
Jane suffered from depression. She spoke openly about her battle with mental health at a Shabbat summer service at Beth Am, opening up a dialogue that evolved into a monthly support group at Congregation Beth Am and in other Bay Area communities.
After her sudden passing in November 2017, many of her friends and colleagues came together with the goal of creating a WRJ Social Action Fund to continue her legacy. Click here for more information on the fund.
